The number of household appliances increases steadily in the average Icelandic household. Around 10% of the energy use of such appliances is usually generated for ‘standby’. It should be kept in mind that during ‘standby’ appliances waste energy. Standby only means a higher electric bill. This type of usage is often called an electric leak because the energy just leaks away. The easiest way to decrease standby usage is to turn appliances off and unplug them.
