Energy and the TV
The TV is the time-thief in the home. It also uses a major portion of the energy. The new LCD´s for instance use an enormous amount of energy, much more than traditional TVsets. Still, most people agree that LCDs are better than Plasma TVs in this respect.
The energy use of various appliances is defined with energy labels, such as Energy Star and the European Energy label.
Around 10% of the electricity used by home appliances is for standby. It should be kept in mind that during standby, gadgets spend energy without really being used. Such appliances only create higher energy bills for the consumer. This kind of standby is often termed energy-leak as the energy leaks away without being used. The easiest way to diminish stand-by use is to either turn off appliances or unplug them.
