Good glasses made from glass or crystal can last for years with proper care. Plastic glasses can also be very handy especially where there are kids at home. It should be avoided, however, to choose glasses made from PVC because they can be detrimental to health.

Good kitchenware used to be considered an “investment for life” as good ceramics or porcelain can be extremely strong besides being exquisitely beautiful. Today a coffee set is considered more an item used for special occasions as they have not been in common use in the home for generations. In any case, it is wise to invest in durable kitchenware of high quality instead of buying new things every other year. The raw material for the glasses and ceramics come from natural resources that do not last forever.

Do not buy composite eating utensilsmade of, for example, plastic and metal which are not durable and might easily break into pieces in the dishwasher. It is most environmentally friendly to buy kitchen utensils made of steel which last for decades. Silverware lasts a lifetime but has to be polished regularly.
