Landvernd tekur þátt í sýningu myndarinnar „Do the Math" með 350.org, en myndin var sýnd um víða veröld síðastliðinn fimmtudag. Ekki þótti ráðlegt að sýna hana hérlendis þann dag, enda Ísland í undanúrslitum Evróvisjón. Á eftir sýningu myndarinnar mun Guðni Elísson, prófessor við HÍ leggja út af myndinni og stýra umræðum. Umræður munu fara fram á ensku. Við hvetjum fólk til að skrá sig á facebook.

Lýsing viðburðarins fylgir hér á eftir á ensku, en í stuttu máli þá fjallar þessi heimildamynd um hina ört stækkandi hreyfingu fólks sem hefur það að markmiði að draga úr loftslagsbreytingum og takast á við jarðefnaeldsneytisfyrirtæki. Í myndinni eru færð rök fyrir því að grípa verði til tafarlausra aðgerða til að takast á við stærstu áskorun 21. aldarinnar: að koma í veg fyrir stórfelldar loftslagsbreytingar.

Landvernd has joined the efforts of 350.org and Bill Mckibben, who recently visited Iceland, and will be hosting a screening of the movie "Do the Math", in co-operation with 350.org worldwide. The screening will be followed by a discussion on climate issues in Iceland. This documentary tells the story of the rising movement to change the terrifying math of the climate crisis and fight the fossil fuel industry. The movie lays out the arguments for the necessity of immediate action to meet the greatest economical, social and environmental challenge of the 21st Century: preventing disastrous climatic change.

On May 9th, the Mauna Loa monitoring station in Hawaii recorded that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere there has exceeded 400 parts per million (ppm). These are the highest CO2 concentrations in 55 years of measurement-and probably in more than 3 million years of Earth history. Scientific evidence indicates that this is the result of human activities, mainly the burn of fossil fuels, but also land use change. According to climate scientists, concentrations need to be kept below 350 ppm if the world is to stand a reasonable chance of meeting international targets to keep average temperature increases below 2 degrees and avoiding disrupting climatic change. We are already seeing the effects of climate change in the form of melting glaciers, rising seas, extreme weather events and droughts. Concentrations above 400 ppm are an ominous sign of what might come next.

After the screening, a discussion on climate issues in Iceland will take place, moderated by Prof. Guðni Elísson from the University of Iceland. The entrance is free and the event is open to everybody. Please come and join us!
