The Christmas stocking or shoe holds the presents of Santa Claus. A present in the shoe represents a good wish for safe travel over the road of life. In the States the stocking is hung up on the fireplace at Christmas night but in Europe the children put their shoe on the windowsill on the 6th of December – St. Nicholas Day. In Iceland the children put their shoes on the windowsill the last 13 days before Christmas, because there are 13 Icelandic Santas!
