Global Energy - Building 21st Century Bridges
Dr. Scott W. Tinker, Bureau of Economic Geology, University of Texas

The bridge from a fossil energy present to an alternate energy future will span many decades. As with the building of any bridge, a solid foundation is vital. A well-designed energy bridge will move the world ahead in a reasonably smooth fashion. Accelerating an energy transition heedlessly via poorly-informed policy could lead to instability and economic collapse.

Building the energy bridge will not be easy; challenges abound. Automobiles are dependent upon liquid fuels for the foreseeable future. Insulation must be vastly improved. Electricity does not store well and electricity transmission systems are inefficient. As electricity continues to grow as a percentage of the energy mix, a grand challenge is a positive disruptive breakthrough in electricity storage and transmission.

Moving to an alternate energy future is a delicate ballet with energy, environment and economy the dancers, energy policy the orchestra, and research and technology the musical score; a beautiful performance requires that all work in concert.

Dr. Scott W. Tinker, Director of the Bureau of Economic Geology and the State Geologist of Texas holds the Allday Endowed Chair in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin and is the Director of the Advanced Energy Consortium. Scott is Past-President of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and Past-President of the Association of American State Geologists (AASG). He spent 17 years in industry prior to coming to UT in 2000. Scott speaks globally and has been a Distinguished Lecturer for AAPG, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Distinguished Ethics Lecturer for AAPG. He holds appointments on the National Petroleum Council, the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, and National Research Council Board of Energy and Environmental Systems (\342\200\23103-\342\200\23109), and serves on several private, professional, and academic boards. Scott\342\200\231s passion is building bridges between academe, industry, and government.
