Some libraries accept books which are of interest to the library, and some communities maintain special containers for books at the largest receiving plants. The books wind up at Góði hirðirinn http://www.nature.is/graenarsidur/inst/726/  or with other parties who can make use of the books or sell them. Books can be given to friends or advertised available for free or for sale. In the case of valuable books it would be prudent to have them appraised. Books are accepted at recycling centers and Góði hirðirinn's reuse containers in the capital area. Unusable books can be put in mixed paper recycling if the covers are torn off (and thrown out with the general household waste).
