Mediveal days at Gásar

Medieval life at Gásir will be reconstructed with help from Icelandic craftsmen who will wear medieval clothes and sell handicraft. Various handcrafts will be on display; dyeing with plant extracts, wool-work, sewing, sewing leather and weaving. Blacksmith will be at work, there will be rope making and iron casting and a ballplay, medieval style. Visitors can test their skills in stone-throwing and can have their future predicted with runes. Vistors can also buy a meatsoup, medieval style. The medieval days begins at 11 and ends at 17 both days.

Visitors can test their skills in stone-throwing and can have their future predicted with runes.

Gásir, situated 11 km north of Akureyri on the shore of Eyjafjörður, is a unique place. (to come there you have to take a turn by Hlíðarbær and drive for 7 km) In no other place in Iceland is it possible to find so many antiquities from a trading post from the Middle Ages. Gásir was the main trading post in northern Iceland during the Middle Ages, and the place is mentioned many times in Old Icelandic Sagas from the 13th and 14th centuries. Archaeological digging in the area during the last six years has shown that it was a trading post up to the 16th century, possibly until trading started in Akureyri.

Admission: Adults: kr 1000. 13 years and younger: kr 250. Free admission for children smaller than a medieval sword.
