The Office - Books

Books are wonderful tools, whether for recreation or for education in order to better understand the world we live in. The cultural level of nations is often assessed by examining literacy and reading habits. Icelanders are a cultural nation and read and buy a lot of books that after being read unfortunately become the prisoners of bookshelves for years or decades.

How would you feel about liberating the books from the bookshelves? When you’ve finished reading a certain book, how about writing your name on the first page and then leaving it at a public spot, like in the bus or in a café so that others can also enjoy it. The book will be widely read and appreciated. From an environmental point of view, less paper is wasted by printing few books that are thoroughly read than many books that are only read by a few. It is also possible to present books to friends or sell them again.

Books require a lot of paper and for paper production forests are needed. But the paper in books is nothing compared to the consumption of newspapers and magazines that are bought and discarded the next day. The paper breaks down during a long time-consuming process. Recycled paper may be used for kitchen rolls. The acidity of paper is one of the main factors influencing environmental labeling. The Nordic Swan, the environmental label of the Nordic Council of Ministers both pertains to the production process and to the environmental impact of paper as such.
